21 miles.
Skipped the Foxboro 10 and glad I did. I figured the benefits of another 20+ miler after last weeks far outweighed those of running a hilly race, given the repeatedly, redundantly referenced gimpy hammy. I knew if I was going to make this long run work, whatever distance it was to be, it was going to have to be played carefully, step by step.
I iced the leg last night and this morning and by the time I put everything on for a cold one, it was feeling decent and cooperative.
I headed out the door and made my way to the bike path, going towards Orleans with the intention of doing 5 that way and then turning for a 10 back to Wellfleet and then finishing with the last 5 home.
I did the first 5 in @ 6:51 pace overall and everything felt fine, as it should since I was being rather careful and easy. I turned and wow, was there a cold headwind. It took me a few minutes to reconcile this, but I figured whatever doesn't kill me, blah, blah, blah...
By 12 I was in a groove and my pace had gone down to 6:33 or so and that's when I ran into Tom coming the other way, accompanied by his Mom on the bike. He was at 13 of an 18 and so I turned and went back with him, knocking off the next 4 @ 6:10 to 6:00 pace and after the 12 previous it felt awesome to open it up a bit, so good in fact that at 16, after I bid him adieu, I started going faster and threw in a couple of 5:53's that felt long and easy. At 20, I felt so damned good, I decided to tack one on and ran a smooth 5:48 to finish.
By the end, the hamstring was intact and everything felt pretty good. My energy was still good and I didn't feel exhausted. The whole thing ended up being a 6:30 pace and I really couldn't be happier with it.
Tonight, I'll ice it all down and tomorrow is a couple of easy ones.
We may do a 24 miler from Hopkinton to Boston next Sunday, so this week will be all about getting to that in one piece and doing as much work as I can on the way, hopefully ending up in the high 90's.
