Passed the Mendoza line (30 miles for the week) with 5 inside. Lungs shot today. Did some weights and then struggled to do the miles at a 6:50 pace. Went to Misaki for sushi afterwards and that made it all better. Actually, still can't breathe, but at least I reached near-Varitekian proportions with a whopping 32. No racing for a while. Might even have to skip Worgan's. I really want to set a new course record at Cape Cod Road Runners Winter Fun Run, but 5:00's are going to be a tall order for 4.8 in 2 weeks. We'll see. Miracles don't happen, but happy accidents can. Last year I threw down 5:05's after an opening 4:58. I think I was just scared to death of Kevin Gray (with good reason, as a month later I ran the race of my life at the MV 20-miler, doing 5:32's and setting my then-pr in the half-marathon at 1:13:15 before Gray pulled away, kept hitting 5:32's and beat me by almost 2 minutes. I ended up with a 1:53:57 and was ecstatic with my 5:42 pace.Unreal. )
Last year coming up to CCRR I did 18 the day before. Maybe this year I should do something similar, like eat a whole pizza 10 minutes before the race, or strap 3 whole chickens to each leg. I missed he course record by 18 seconds last year at CCRR. Lou Ristaino has it and I'd need a perfect day to go 5:01 the whole way, but hell, I did it at CVS for 3.1 and it was hot. Stranger things have happened.
Chickens, duct tape. It's on.
