Tuesday, November 3rd, 2015

Soooo, it looks as if I've really let the blog go. However, this action (or lack of) shouldn't be perceived as my having let running go (at least not to the same seemingly total degree.)
Since July, I've become a 100% full-time (or more) working photographer, leaving precious little time for running. And it seems that between the weekend days of being on my feet and running around with 25 lbs. of gear for 12 hours and the work on the days in between, I ended up with achilles soreness like I've never experienced before. Plus, I decided to race both a 5 miler and a 10k on very little training, with the 5 miler (in a not-so-bad 27:18, given said lack of training) coming days after a hard 18 (a dumb but emotionally necessary thing after the weeks of less than 40 miles a week.)
The 10k was Lone Gull and was about as bad as it gets. 34:48 for a PW and a renewed sense of "What the fuck is happening to me?"
But, now that wedding season has finally concluded, I'm able to run a little more, not because of more time, as I'm still taking on loads of jobs and editing like a crazy person, but because my body isn't getting beaten up on a weekly basis in the same way.
The last two weeks I've managed 45+ miles (who ever thought I'd be so happy about that?) and have been running some decently fast ones at that. On my 45th birthday a little over a week ago, I managed back to back 5:41 and 5:22 miles and have been seeing more sub 6:00 pace than I've seen in a long time.
Now I just need to be careful that I don't keep myself in a sense of fatigue through the winter, as I really do want to have a good Boston.
There are Thanksgiving races coming up and Mill Cities after that, so if I need to shut it down for a week, I can do so for the 2nd week of December. The more I think about that scenario, the more it seems like a good idea, but that's easier said than done if I'm feeling relatively ok.
Anyway, good to be back on the blog, if for no other reason than I'm reminding myself that yes, I'm still a runner.

Sunday, July 26th, 2015

So, basically, due to a barely-able-to-keep-up-with uptick in the photo biz, I've not had enough time to even think about keeping up with the blog. So, in a nutshell, for the last 8 weeks I've been running 5-6 days a week and totaling @ 50+ miles a week on singles with some decent workouts and a long run here and there. Been running 6:30-6:45 pace and sometimes getting under 6:00 and just basically feeling pretty darned good.
Hope to race more soon. Yup. That is all.

Thursday, May 7th, 2015

6.2 @ 6:50 pace. Warmed up slow after the good 10 yesterday, but again found that 6:35's is just my nice, smooth pace. Now, if I can just start getting some speed work in next week, I may actually have a decent 10k in Ptown in a few weeks.

27 miles. @ 1 mile warmup, then 26.2 from Hopkinton to Boston. 2:46:33.
Went in with the full knowledge that this had to be a conservative effort, as I'd done just enough to get to the line in one piece and not blow up.
Went out even @ 6:20 and got things down to the 615-6:02 range for the whole thing. The Chipotle I had the night before caused 3 bathroom breaks which resulted in @ 2:45 being taken up, but I got back in the game, especially after the last one at 20. Cold and rainy all the way, but I closed strong with sub 6:15's the last 10k and came hard down Boylston. Started to get cold right after the finish and went to the med tent with a 94 body temp. They put me under some blankets and fed me hot beef broth for 45 minutes and I came back fine. Got up and out and found the fam.
Not one of my best races, but definitely proud of, again and as in Manchester, finding a way to get the job done and executing. Now I want to train for the summer and actually attack one a bit more this fall, such as Bay State. I felt as if I could have gone 6:05's all day were it not for the mutiny in my gut and so for the fall, I'd like to target a 5:50 pace again and get down well below 2:35.

Warmed up for 4, then did 4 between 5:31 and 6:04. Just getting used to marathon effort. The 5:31 was a lot of downhill, whereas the 6:04 was a lot of up, so all in all, it was a decent medium effort and it just felt right. Couldn't have asked for a better day. Good hills and running out on Ocean View in Wellfleet. Great last effort before winding it down.

So, that does it, Boston is on. I'm still not foolish enough to think I'm going to light one up, but I do feel as if I can get through it in a decent time (well, relatively, as in 2:45 or so.) Makes for my longest run in over a year and first 70 mile week in that time as well.

Monday, March 16th, 2015

7 miles super slow. Jeeeezus...

Sunday, March 15th, 2015

15 miles. New Bedford 1/2 Marathon (2 mile warmup.)
Who knows? Maybe it was the lack of sleep for both nights before and the 12 hours wedding that put me in bed at 2:45 a.m. the night prior to the race. Maybe it's that I'm fat. Maybe it's the lack of speedwork, miles, racing. Whatever it is, I ran my slowest 1/2 ever. 1:15:38.
If I'd blown up, that would be one thing, but no, I went no faster than 5:35 and no slower than 5:59.
Don't get me wrong, I ran a smart, strong race. I knew from the get go that I wasn't going to be running fast this day, so I'd better just run strong, because the way the wind was, it was going to kick the shit out of us from 9.5 to 12 (which is did.)
I stayed even throughout and closed with a monstrous kick, as I was trying to catch someone (which I did.)
Overall, I can't be that disappointed (though, obviously, I am.) It is what it is. I wore the Hokas and, subsequently, came away from it no worse for the wear.
Now, the question I have is this: Since I'd planned on NOT running Boston because I wanted to stay healthy and get faster in order to run James Joyce and whatever other short stuff comes up (Doyle's, etc.), I'm rethinking things and coming up with this: I'm not going to be running even 5:20's anytime soon it appears, but my energy is good and my legs are good, so what the fuck am I saving myself for? What I'm coming up with is: Run Boston because it's there and I can and then I can re-qualify for next year by just doing anything under 2:50 (and oh my fuck, what have I become where I'm not hanging myself over a 1:15+ half and thinking sub 2:50 is a good, optimistic goal? Yeesh) and just looking forward to whatever happens after that.
So, this Sunday I'll go 18-20 with some friends and see what comes of it. If I feel ok, then it's probably a go. I mean, hell, it's Boston, and it's been almost 10 years since I've even had to worry about qualifying, so the last thing I want to have to do is think about running a late-summer marathon after all these weddings just to make sure I'm in for next year.
If I can stay healthy for the rest of the year, I really don't see myself NOT getting some decent speed back, so a good showing at Boston in 2016 would be a realistic goal. As for now, I'm just hoping that this isn't the rapid decline of a once-decent-but-never-great runner.
2 years ago I ran 1:11:58. In other words, WTF?

Great run and felt fine afterwards. No kinks or injury flaring up.

USATF-NE Garnd Prix Race #1- 5 Realtors 10 Miler

So, going into this race, I really didn't know what to expect. I've had 5 good weeks of training, but really more just "running" than training. I kind of figured that I wouldn't have a heck of a lot of leg speed, but I was just hoping that 5:40 or faster would be a decent average pace. The good news is that 5:38-5:28 was doable on flats, the bad news is that with the nasty dirt section and the hill that preceded it, I lost a crapload of time that I was just no way going to make up.
But really, the even better news was that overall, I was stronger than I thought I'd be with more strength late-race than I figured I'd have, after I'd made a few really poorly chosen surges on the dirt part to get around people on the single track.
I ended up with a 57:50, 44th place overall and 6th Master. I really can't complain about those numbers, since I picked up some serious names in the last two miles and as for the ones who came ahead of me, they were all absolutely legit and I actually consider it a hell of an accomplishment to have come as close as I did to any of them (though I was, as expected, nowhere near Magill, who ran a completely insane time on that nasty course. Kudos to he and Chris Lawrence, who likewise ran crazy fast on that thing at 51. Yow.)
Ends up with a decent week where I'm healthy and not too beat up. Even ran in some old Adidas flats yesterday and survived, so that's a good sign. If something ain't breaking with those shoes on that course, then things must be fairly well healed (knock wood.)

Glad that I was strong enough to run quick at the end of a hour+ run, but not psyched with the fact that I tried to get that last mile under 5:30 and just didn't have it. There was a headwind on the last mile, but nonetheless, I'm just not that fast right now. The good thing is that I have no doubt I can race the 10 at sub 5:40 pace, but sub 5:30's are another story. considering the last year, this should come as no surprise, but I really want to get back to where 5:19 is not unusual for any 1/2 marathon or under distance.
With all the travel and food, this week was actually pretty decent.

13.7 miles with Tom and Mike in Barnstable. Mushy and slushy but great company and I felt surprisingly good energy-wise. Quads a little sore, but they started about a bit that way due to all the squatting at the meet last night. Best week in a while and Boston seems increasingly possible.

10 miles with Scott and Tom on the messy roads of Eastham. Best run I've had in a long time. 6:45 overall and picked it up for the last 3 with a 5:53 last mile. Felt strong and balanced and not trying terribly hard to hit that pace. The how and why of this is a mystery, but I'll take it. Oh, and then after the Patriots won the Super Bowl. Kind of a good day.

Sunday, January 25th, 2015

7 miles @ 6:49.
This was supposed to be a long run, but I've been feeling as if I have something coming on for days and I think it's hit.
Last time I got sick, I remember being on the bike with an elevated heart rate and my legs, specifically my quads, ended up feeling as beat up as if I'd run 23 miles or biked 90 (when I'd only done 30.)
So, after 5, they started to ache, and by 7, I knew even going 8 was a bad idea. So the week ended at 40 for a total.
I'm still plenty glad that I'm feeling good otherwise as far as running in general, and that 7-8 miles @ decent pace feels as good as it has in a long time. I've got some base fitness. Whether any of this will translate into me being able to run even under 57 at Amherst remains  to be seen. I'm just taking it day by day and am just damned happy I can run. Competing comes next.

Sunday, January 11th, 2015

So, the journal has obviously gone to hell, but it hopefully will return as I do.
The race I did three weeks was likely a bit too much too soon and hardly yielded good results, beyond the simple (but very enjoyable) feeling of racing.
A couple days later, I found myself relegated to the shelf and the bike again, as my foot was bothering me and I shut it down as a precaution.
So, two weeks off and now a week back that saw me run 40 miles, all in the new Hoka Clifton's I got Monday. 2 days of 6, 2 days of 7 and then today, I just felt like continuing to run until I felt like not continuing, which turned into 14 miles, with the last 8 at @ 6:37 pace (6:46 overall.) I felt good. My energy felt surprisingly good, which, well, surprised me. An hour and half of highish heart rate without bonking left me feeling like I might actually be able to think about tacking another 75 minutes on there from Hopkinton to Boston. Sure it was one run, but it felt rather good and my feet and legs didn't hurt (much.) The Hoka's are for real and I have a second pair on order. I at least want to be able to be relatively competitive at Amherst. Anything under 57 would be very nice.
So without a day by day breakdown, I had a week with 5 runs, 1 bike (for an hour) for 40 miles of running. It's a start.

5 days of running for 32 miles and a 3.12 mile race at 5:28 pace. Foot survived. No injury, just a tough 3rd mile of that race. Went 5:22, 5:27. 5:41. Still, I'm damned happy to be running.

December 1st-December 7th

2 days of running. 5.2 one day, 4.5 2 days later. Foot fine. Legs gonna need some work.

The new bike (and myself) felt great. Really, the difference in material and geometry provided for the exact riding experience I've been seeking. There's always that nagging concern that I might have switched out a perfectly good this-that-or-the-other for whatever I did, but in this case, going from the 53cm titanium to the 51cm carbon could not have been a wiser choice. Now I just need to get back into shape and really put the thing to the test. Can't wait.
Also, this was the first time in 2 weeks where I didn't feel like crap getting exercise, so there's that.

Felt pretty good from the start, but I also felt like I might have a cold coming on. So, I thought it might be a good day for a 6 x 3:00 10k pace workout, but instead thought better of it and decided to just run. But, after a bathroom break in Wellfleet at 5.2, I left the filthiest restroom and just started booking it back, finishing the easier mile I'd started in 5:52. Then, I just kept it at what felt like 1/2 pace and went 5:25 and 5:24, before cooling it off to 6:09, but then I felt great in the last 1/2 mile and finished with another 5:52, feeling easy.
Don't know what came over me, but it felt pretty good to go quick. Hoping I can find a way to go quick at the 10k.

Monday, September 8, 2014

Sunday, September 7th, 2014

8 miles. Mighty Meehan 5k.

So, I've won this race twice, those wins being in the first 2 years of the event. Both years, it was a Pub Series race and I was in as good shape as I've ever been (2009, 2010.) Both years, I was chased by very fast people who I knew had every right to think they could beat me on any given day (because most of the top 10 behind me had at one point or another.) I had to be on top of my game and I was both years, peaking at just the right time. The first year, I ran 15:38, and at the time, that was my second fastest 5k ever. The next year, I ran 15:24, which is still my PR.
This year is a slightly different story.
My last 5k was the one I did in Florida, where I proceeded to run 16:29 with some of the ugliest, blowed-up splits I've ever had. So, going into this, I was going to be damned sure I didn't do that again. I wasn't quite so certain that I wouldn't end up with the same time, but if I did, I wanted it to be straight 5:19's across the board, as opposed to 5:07, 5:18, 5:33. Yeesh.
So, Scott and I drove to Dennis, fairly sure, given the last few year's results that we would likely be 1 and 2, but one never knows. After warming up, it appeared that would likely be the case, but I still needed to execute.
I've never felt so unfamiliar with racing as I do right now, but I just haven't done nearly enough of it lately to know what my pacing and effort should be. So, I went out a touch conservative and ended up with a 5:18 first mile, just as I'd both feared and expected. I pressed on and recorded a 5:14 second, which was a slight improvement and I was out of the headwind I'd had for the first. By this time, Scott was still only 20 seconds back, which is a gap, but not an insurmountable one if I crashed and burned and he smelled blood. Instead, I found myself feeling good enough to press and I accelerated through the last 1/2 of the final mile to record a 5:11 and really kick the last .1 for 16:08 overall. Not bad. Great to see everyone as well. I forgot, again, how much I love the people on the Cape running scene. Always feels like home.
I would have liked to get a sub-16:00, but given the fact that this is exactly how I came back 2 years ago to race a 5k on little training and experience, I'm not going to panic. I've got Lone Gull next weekend and the big question on that will be how tired I am or am not after the late wedding in Ptown the night before. If I'm ok, I should be able to hold 5:19's for a while and maybe sniff 33. We'll see.
Regardless, a good end to a decent week that gets me over 50 again on 6 days of singles. I'll take it.

Went into this not knowing what to expect, but hoping for something just under 5:30 pace for the distance. With my (lack of) training and my last race being the abysmal Ribfest 5 Miler where I ran as slow as I have in 10+ years, frankly, I was a bit frightened and not especially optimistic.
Still, the air was cool and rainy and I'd been running fairly well of late, albeit irregularly.
The horn sounded and we were off. I started out in 10th or 11th and we hit the mile in 5:18. I felt fine. The pack broke into a couple groups and I led for a bit at mile 2 and no one was going away with it. By 3, I was still solidly on 5:19 pace and I was with 3 other younger guys. They went from me on a couple of downhills and duked it out on their own, a mere 100 meters ahead. I just couldn't make it up and settled for 4th in 28:02. I really couldn't be happier. It's one of my faster times on the course and I ran 5:19 for the whole thing and didn't get hurt. A very happy surprise gift on this 15th anniversary of sobriety for me. Now I just want a win.

Tuesday, July 29th, 2014

5 miles @ 6:33 pace. Since I'm, basically, training like I did when I was 33, I wouldn't mind even seeing the results I got when I was 33, which weren't great and weren't anything like what they became by the time I was 38, or 40, but hey, at 33, I was clocking 5:25 pace for 5 milers and right now, I'd be happy as a clam with that.

Tuesday, July 29, 2014

Monday, July 28th, 2014

8 miles @ 6:35 pace. Felt good, but decided to make it 8 rather than 10, as the calf was a bit tender and I'd rather be able to run tomorrow than not.

Sunday, July 27th, 2014

0 miles.
Fully intended to run at least 6 or 7 today, but the rain came and regardless, I was absolutely wiped after yesterday's wedding and driving. Plus, working last night I realized that my left calf, right in that same troubled area, was killing me. We'll have to play this by ear from here on out.

First time on the track in well over a year. Felt very surprisingly very good. Ran with Mike and Rory.
Warmed up, then did 800 in 2:28, then 8 x 200 from 34 to 32. Felt even the whole way. Felt fine after the cooldown. Great night.

Ran endlessly around the parking lots and access roads around the hotel in Michigan after getting a fantastic sleep. Don't know what it was exactly, but keeping it around or under 6:10 wasn't much effort. Threw in a 5:50 for fun and even that wasn't hard at all. Loving a run like that. More please.

Well, so ends another week with pitiful numbers, but just enough to still stay in ultimate-low-baseline shape. With this cold, the breathing gets harder and harder, but I just want to maintain this sort of neutral status, so that when it leaves, I can actually, eventually race on some slightly elevated training.

Just a tough pill to swallow that I ended up with a 28:07. Could it have been worse? Sure.
I did finish with a 5:27 for my fastest mile, which is both good and terrible at the same time.

This ended up being exactly the kind of run I'm trying to avoid. Went with a buddy who just wasn't feeling it and ended up really holding back. Not the end of the world and we had some decent points, but when I'm running 3 days a week, I want every one to count and feel right, and this was not that.
Oh well, biking tomorrow.
