9 miles. Provincetown 10k.
Got there early and saw all sorts of familiar faces, as the race doubled in size with lots of CCAC folks and a few other contenders from around the Cape. I was warming up and saw none other than Tim Perry doing the same. "Holy shit," I thought, as I really hadn't expected anyone especially quick to be here and here I see someone who has run times I can't even think of. Got sort of psyched, as suddenly this was to be a serious race (not that it wouldn't have been otherwise, but well, y'know.)
Headed out quick, but not crazy and Tim was with me for the first 800, then I got a little ahead of him on a rise and never saw him again. He said afterwards his post-Boston training has been way low. Still, I was freaked out enough by his presence to keep the pedal pretty much down the whole time.
Went out conservatively in 5:24, hit a nasty headwind for 2 and did that in 5:30 and then the wind got nastier and along with a couple little climbs, I had a 5:33 3rd.
Still, I felt strong and I wasn't going to let this thing go off the rails and turn into a 34+ affair, so I kept working. Caught a break with a tailwind on the highway and proceeded to go 5:21, 5:18, 5:24 and finished strong for 33:25 on the day. Not spectacular, but nonetheless a good result, given being alone and running for time. Did a little running log research to find out that this was my first win since last July at the Cape Cod 5k. Glad I snagged one within a year. Yeesh.
Still need to head to the track and get my sub 5:15 pace back on.
Feeling good post-race and looking forward to a sub-33 effort at Newton with a little cooperation from the course, of course. A horse is a horse, blah, blah, blah...)
