January 4, 2009

Well I never thought I'd be so happy about running a race slower than I ever have, but I did just that today at the Cape Cod Roadrunners Winter Fun Run and I really am rather pleased.
2 years ago I ran 25:35 under perfect conditions for a 5:16 pace over the 4.85 mile course. Last year I had the race of my life and was in tip-top shape, going 24:55 and 5:08 on a once again perfect day. This year, things were a bit slushy/icy, a bit windy and I was a bit ill. All this led to a 25:58, or a 5:21 pace. Still, I ran even; 5:19 first mile, slowest (3) was 5:25 and my last was 5:16 (pace.) Still not where I want to be at the moment, but satisfactory.
Between warm-up, race and cool-down, I ended up with 9 in Bourne. came back and ran around some snowy playing fields with Tom and the dogs for another 5 or so. Gives me 51 (finally) for the week and tomorrow is long (15.) I don't have any grand plans for laying down any sick times before the DH Jones 10 and the NB 1/2, but I feel like getting in the miles bewteen now and then won't hurt me and will get me back to being able to hold those 5:20's for as long as I want (meaning a sub-54 10 and a sub-1:12 1/2.) Time to get to work.
