February 1, 2009

Well, 12 miles gets me to 80 for the week again. I didn't warm up as much as might have liked to for the 10 miler (1.5 miles) or cool down as much as I should have (.5 miles,) but somewhere in between I ran a 10 mile race in (ahem)  53:59.
Yeah, yeah, I know. I'm not going to the Olympics anytime soon, nor will I even crack the top 10 at the DH Jones in 3 weeks. Still, it's what I've always wanted to do (go under 54, barely) and ran 58 seconds faster than last year, when I thought I was feeling pretty damned good going into the Vineyard 20 and the New Bedford 1/2.
Weather was great, albeit mildly windy. Only 3 or 4 climbs, but good ones at that and I stayed even with them. The hardest part was the wind along Craigville beach on the way out. It gave me a 5:41 mile for the 4th, which knocked me off my pace a bit. I went through 5 at 27:20 because of it. I knew I'd have my work cut out for me on the way back, but the miles have paid off as I was able to keep going fast for the next 5. 5:18, 5:25, 5:29, 5:24, 5:11. Set the new course record by 34 seconds and felt OK to boot. Very happy with the result.
